Halloween Fun!

What a fun Halloween today!  We did Halloween Math with Skittles, we built our own playdoh monsters, and we played in the gym dancing to "Halloween Just Dance" we had a parade and then a party!  Thank you for all of the delicious food for the party!

Last week I asked the students to design a costume for me.  The majority said "Witch", lucky me, because that's a costume I had in my tickle trunk! :)

Jack and the Beanstalk

This week we were treated to a live production of "Jack and The Beanstalk".  It was so good!

Star of the Week - India

It was a lot of fun learning more about our friend, Indy.  Well done, India!

Learning how to spell words

Each day we practice new letter sounds.  We are learning how to spell and read words.  One strategy that I use for spelling is "Say It, Tap It, Map It, Read It".  I dictate a word.  Students repeat the word.  We tap the sounds in the word and then we "map" each sound into a sound box to spell and then read the word.

It's important that students can hear each sound in a word and then correctly match the sound to the letter the sound represents.

I am seeing so much growth, every single day!

Word Work - Letter Tiles

It's an exciting time in grade one.  We now know 6 letter sounds including 1 vowel so we are learning to build words, spell and read!

We practice this skill by "building words" with magnets.  I dictate a "sound" and students find the corresponding letter that represents the sound.  After three sounds we have build a word.
