Fall Scarecrows

September 30th

Today we read "Scarecrow" by Cynthia Rylant. We took inspiration from the story to draw and then paint a scarecrow.  I love how they each have a slightly different personality.

Stay tuned....scarecrow stories coming next week!!

Classifying Rocks

September 28th

We know there are many different ways to describe and classify rocks.  Today we sorted our rocks in to many different categories.  Some of the categories included: Colour/Texture/Shape/Size/Weight/Luster.  We also came up with words to describe the rocks that fell in to each of the categories.  For example some texture words included: bumpy, smooth, rough, jagged and sharp.

Woot-Woot!  Today was School Spirit Day & The Terry Fox Run day. What a fun afternoon.

Math Stations ~ Hands on Learning!

September 25th

Here's a glimpse of our math stations in action.  Each day the students get to practice their math skills by working with games, manipulatives, playing cards or other fun things!  This month our focus has been on time and the clock, addition facts and patterning.  Each station box has slightly different activities and materials in them.  The students work in partners, they practice with a different station box each day.  Math stations take place after a whole group lesson and after the pencil and paper practice.

Here they are, all finished and in the display case.

September 23, 2015

For art today, and to go along with our rocks mineral we painted "pet rocks".  Each student collected a medium sized rock to turn in to a pet.  They did a great job!

Colour and Rocks

September 21st, 2015

We know that rocks are made up of minerals.  Each colour that you see in a rock is likely a different mineral.  Today the students investigated the rocks in their own rock collections.  They discovered that most rocks contain many minerals, they were able to pick out several different colours in each rock.

Rock Show!

September 14th

We held our "Rock Show" today!  The students each brought a rock collection to show off.  We had fun learning from each other and checking out all of the different rocks!    There are some pretty neat collections!  We even had a giant piece of petrified wood (thank you, Connor!).

We have learned that there are 3 types of rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic). Students spent some time trying to classify each of their rocks.  We also  know that all rocks are made from minerals.  Students used magnifying glasses to try and spot the minerals in their rocks. It was a fun afternoon.

We have a lot more fun learning to do with these collections!

Me Box Project

September 2015

The students' first assignment was a "Me Box" project.  Students were to collect 5-6 items that would tell something about them;  things that are they favourites or things that are important to them. They were to place these items in to a box and bring it to school.  Each student had a chance to present their "Me Box" to the class.  It was a great way for us to learn a little bit more about each other.  I was very impressed with the creativity of these boxes and their items!  Way to go!

Here are the pictures of the presentations.

And a collage of the show and tell afterwards.  We put all of the boxes on display for a closer look.

Team Building & Synergy

The Tin Foil Challenge

The challenge:  Students were given 15 minutes, 10 pipe cleaners and one large piece of tinfoil.  They were put  together in small groups and asked to create something!  They were not allowed to use any extra supplies.  When they were finished they named their creation.  Here is how they turned out!
Great team work, 3S!

September 12, 2015

Time flies!  We're back at it.  Busy learning in grade 3.

I have been looking forward to meeting my new group of grade threes all summer!!  I am so excited to say that I have a wonderful group of kids again this year.  I'm so lucky!!  I am very much enjoying getting to know each one of these great kids.  We've had a super first few days together as a group.

Thursday was "Meet The Teacher" night.  Here's a little slideshow that I had playing in the classroom.  These are the pictures from our first day.

I'm looking forward to a really amazing year.

Enjoy!
